La Feria de Abril: Seville, Spain
La Feria de Abril: Seville, Spain

During my junior year abroad, I had the opportunity to study in Granada, Spain—a city that became the heart of my European adventure. Reflecting on those months, I’m reminded of how extraordinary European travel can be. From the charming Scandinavian streets of Sweden to the breathtaking beaches of southern Portugal, every destination offers its unique point of magical differentiation. To celebrate these unforgettable places, I’ve created a list of superlative awards for the cities that truly stood out. And the winners are...

Most Underrated: Lisbon, Portugal

Jerónimos Monastery: Lisbon, Portugal

From north to the south, Portugal has an abundance of pleasurable destinations- and you shouldn't miss out on the country's capital. Each winding street offers something new to explore, and getting lost is encouraged by the city's design. From the Jerónimos Monastery to the Torre de Bélem, the history is rich and the architecture is simply stunning. Don't forget to take Tram 28 on a tour of the city!

If you have time, I HIGHLY reccommend a day trip to the gorgeous town of Sintra. About an hour train outside of Lisbon, Sintra is home to the famous Palacio da Pena and features gorgeous mountain trails that showcase Portugal's natural beauty.

Incredible History: Granada, Spain

The Alhambra- Patio de Los Leones: Granada, Spain

After living in Granada for six months, I will always hold a special appreciation to my home abroad. Beyond the gorgeous cobblestone streets and magnificent scenery, the historical significance of this destination cannot be denied. The Alhambra, the city's pride and joy, is one of the most famous examples of Islamic architecture in the world. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Alhambra palace stands as a historic landmark where, in 1492, Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand completed the Reconquista by receiving the surrender of Granada's last Muslim ruler. This pivotal moment marked the end of nearly eight centuries of Islamic rule in Spain.

Nicest People: Stockholm, Sweden

Skärgårdens Kanotcenter Kayaks & Outdoor: Vaxholm, Sweden

Before traveling to Sweden, I really did not know much about the country besides that it was famous for vikings, meatballs, and IKEA. However, after five days in Stockholm, I walked away with a profound appreciation for Swedish culture and the sheer kindness of its people.

If you plan to visit Stockholm, check out these excursions, restaurants, and museums:

  • Kayaking Expedition with Skärgårdens Kanotcenter Kayaks & Outdoor in Vaxholm: Link

  • Old Town Stockholm

  • Meatballs for the People

  • Djurgårdsbron Restaurant

  • Vasa Museum

  • ABBA Museum

  • Fotografiska Museum

Coolest Neighborhoods & Best Nightlife:

London, England

The Palace of Westminster: London, England

While London is one of the world's most visited cities, the high traffic is surely warranted. Boasting some of the most vibrant and distinctive neighborhoods I've ever encountered, London offers a one-of-a-kind experience for every type of traveler. Whether you're drawn to history, thrifting, cuisine, live music, or nightlife, this city has it all. Public transportation is easy to navigate, with each new neighborhood bringing you to a newfound appreciation for London. Your experience in the Swinging City will be even better if a local can show you around!

Beautiful Beaches: Algarve, Portugal

Ponta da Piedade: Lagos, Portugal

If you are in need of a coastal getaway, the Algarve is for you! Portugal's southernmost region has beaches that attract both the old and the young, with adventure at each cave and cove. I recommend a visit during the month of May as the weather for my trip could not have been better!

Highlights of the Algarve include:

  • Playa Benagil

  • Lagos: Ponta da Piedade

  • Sagres: Cabo San Vicente “Fin del Mundo”

Best All Round: Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Leaning Canal Houses: Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Even nine months later, I am still raving about my time in Amsterdam to friends and family. The city is truly a marvel, with over 165 canals spanning 75km. The extraordinary destination blends rich historical significance with a vibrant culture, offering delicious cuisine, a diverse array of breweries, and stunning natural elements seamlessly integrated into its urban design. Amsterdam's lively nightlife, environmentally friendly ethos, and welcoming locals eager to share their city make it a must visit.

Check out my top recommendations:

  • Anne Frank House (book your tickets when they release six weeks in advance)

  • Van Gogh Museum

  • Keukenhof Tulip Gardens (March-May)

  • Canal tour: Link

  • Jazz Café Alto

  • Brouwerij ’t IJ - Proeflokaal de Molen

  • De Biertuin

  • Dutch food to try: Stroopwaffles, bitterballen, fries with truffle mayo

Bon voyage! Wishing you safe and unforgettable European travels ahead! 🌍✈️
